Before and during the pandemic, Wildwood Elementary/Middle School offered several after-school opportunities. Students took part in an after-school arts program through Access Art, and thrived in a Step program in partnership with the University of Maryland. The school also created a grief group for students struggling with the loss of loved ones. Once the pandemic hit, Wildwood Elementary/Middle School stepped up to consistently communicate with parents, distribute laptops, and work with teachers to keep things going. Principal Lipscomb was officially honored for this effort by Baltimore City Public Schools. In addition to the services offered to students, under the leadership of a dedicated parent, the school also introduced its first Parent Teacher Organization. Over the summer, the new Community School Coordinator, Molly McCracken, and Wholeness Specialist, Arounda Quickely-Riley, facilitated a Summer Social Emotional Learning program that provided opportunities for children to virtually explore nature, practice yoga and mindfulness, and enjoy theatrical productions. The team has been working diligently to plan for a virtual opening this September, communicating with parents, working through obstacles, and keeping morale up.
This year, Wildwood has:
- Distributed more than 300 laptops
- Leveraged 17 partnerships
- Had 232 students participate in after-school programming
- Distributed approximately 9,840 pounds of food to families
