Testimonies

Direct feedback from the school administrators and staff members working in the schools and communities that are a part of our Intensive Climate Collaborative Cohort. These are the people doing active work to help improve school climate and improve student outcomes.

“The Positive Schools Center is absolutely inspirational. . . I have been pushed to see beyond the person in front of me and understand the history that has created an individual who is emotionally and socially traumatized. As such, I am motivated to be trauma-preventative and responsive.”
~ Principal Nikomar Mosley, Gwynns Falls Elementary School

“The PSC has helped us to transform our school community into one that acknowledges the value of emotional health, including that of our faculty. All of our faculty meetings begin with opportunities to appreciate each other. PSC Coaching has helped me to integrate new ways for staff to share why they value their colleagues into our school culture.”
~ Principal Henson, Hilton Elementary School

“When I began my training with the Positive Schools Center I was skeptical [but] even in these initial stages of implementation the impact has been enormous. Discipline referrals and out of school suspensions have been reduced. Restorative Approaches provide a framework to create a positive and enjoyable classroom and school community. Community is essential to responding to the trauma in our students’ lives. Traumatized children need daily opportunities to connect with caring adults in a nurturing community. Restorative Approaches does not take the place of teaching around self-discipline and creating a culture of high expectations; instead, Restorative Approaches provides a tool to help school staff achieve those positive characteristics.”
~ Heather Stone, Director of Culture and Climate, Afya Public Charter School

“Working in an elementary school is a long-term, complex prospect. The choices that you make, the programs you support and teach, the discussions you have with children are all the foundational building blocks that will, hopefully, one day, stand strong as those same children face the challenges of growing up. Since Leah Beachley – our Community School Coordinator at Wolfe Street Academy – arrived a little over a year ago, she has kept all of us focused on learning and faithfully implementing restorative and mindful practices throughout the school. Developing these characteristics in ourselves, let alone our students, is certainly a long-term and complex process. Thank You, Leah!”
~ Principal Mark Gaither, Wolfe Street Academy
