Children’s adverse experiences affect the development of children’s brains and their behavior in school. School staff need tools to respond to the traumatic experiences of their students, neighborhoods, and themselves. Further understanding can be garnered from “The Pair of ACEs” diagram below, which demonstrates how adverse childhood experiences interact with adverse community environments to create the tree as an end result. To pursue trauma-responsive educational practices, a person must remember these elements and their intersection with human development.
